I cleared all of the fault codes before starting the engine again. All of the voltage issue codes have disappeared but I still have the codes that relates to the smart charging and the alternator control. The battery warning light has reappeared on the dash. The alternator is giving a nice consistent voltage around 14. Thanks for the info, you were right with the whistling noise and yep voltage was 11.6 and so car is now in garage getting new one fitted which turned out to be a nightmare as the alternator is at the back of the engine and with the gas pipes it has to come out throught the bottom, meaning drive shaft, wishbone TRE etc all has to come off then drop the driveshaft bracket, unbolt the alternator Alternator Check. put a meter across the battery. Remember when you remove the smart charge 3 pin plug from the back of the alternator, it reverts to a conventional alternator! If you do not have about 13.8 volts, carry out basic charging system checks and suspect the alternator, its not a smart charge fault ! Started the car up yesterday and again this morning. My alternator give 13.8V and charges the battery. Battery seems to hold a reasonable charge 12.4v at rest but the battery light comes on shortly after starting engine and stays on. Removed the smart charge lead from alternator to test output to battery but makes no difference. Any help appreciated.
